Timberlane Middle School Science, Engineering, and Maker Fair
Register to Participate.
All young scientists wishing to display a project at the fair (either traditional or design challenge based) must register in advance through this online form. Final registration deadline has been extended to February 14th. Any questions please contact Vicky Pilitsis, vickypilitsis@hvrsd.org
Projects Should be Student Driven.
Project and design ideas should come from the students, and the project should be driven by them. Parents should use their best judgment in deciding when to get involved, such as when there is a potential safety issue. Any questions please contact Vicky Pilitsis, vickypilitsis@hvrsd.org.
Working with Someone Else.
You may work on your project independently, or you may optionally work with a partner who is also a student at Timberlane. All team partners must be at the fair and present to be eligible for the grand prize raffle.
Need Help Choosing a Topic?
When it comes to choosing a topic, the sky is the limit! What have you wondered about? The best topics come from your own genuine curiosity about how something works, or why something is the way that it is. But if you have trouble thinking of something on your own, the internet is full of resources to help you choose a topic.
Judging and Awards.
Each participant will have an opportunity to briefly present their project to a judge, and will be awarded a certificate. There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner for traditional and design challenge projects in each grade, as well as Honorable Mentions. Please see our Judging Criteria page for more information on what the judges will be looking for with your presentation.
Schedule of Events
Set Up will be Friday, March 6th, from 4:00-6:00pm.
Doors open to the public at 11:30am. Food for lunch will be available for purchase during this time. Judging begins at 12pm, Saturday, March 7th. The presentations will be judged between 12-1pm. The interviews/judging will occur in 2 groupings (12-12:30 and 12:30-1) and students must be present with their project during their assigned time. Students should be prepared to give a brief 3 minute overview of their project and answer questions from the judges. NO PARENTS are allowed next to or in the immediate area of their child's display while their child's project is being judged. Judge's discussions and scoring occur from 1-2pm and NO ONE is allowed in the display area of the cafeteria during this time. Access to Antimos will continue during the judges time from 1-2pm.
1:15-2pm The entire Science Fair moves to the front hallways. There we will have several small presentations including (possibly) animals, some hand on activities, and the CHS Robotics Team. The exact presentations and activities will be posted as soon as they are finalized. The FabLab and Tinker spaces will be open during the entire time from 11:30 until 2pm.
2-3:00pm Awards Ceremony and Raffle/Door Prize Awards. Trophies will be presented by Ms. Gianfredi.
Cleanup immediately following the awards.
Please bring your project (display board only) to the lobby for display or take it home with you.
Volunteers Needed!
A big event like the science fair wouldn't be possible without the help of numerous volunteers. There are many different jobs to be done, so if you think you can spare an hour or two on the day of the fair, we would love your help. Please contact either Sara Albers (ssbalbers@icloud.com) or Ana Teodorescu (ateodorescu@brookdalecc.edu) or sign up online at the link below:
